A jubilant collection of 16 piano gems from the Romantic era from young pianist Jeffrey Biegel falls just short of excellence.
Never appearing rushed or sounding too sudden, Biegel is a master at performing the musical miniatures written by composers such as Moszkowski, Schütt, Bortkiewicz, Paderewski, and Rubinstein. Biegel effortlessly performs nearly every one with such tenacity and gripping hands that it evokes the same passion these works originally inspired in their day.
Where A Grand Romance takes a step back is somewhat shaky transitions (on “Étincelles”notably) but not enough to deter the overall seamlessness of Biegel’s pacing.
A grand romance indeed, its love at first sound.
