The most accessible effort from neo-experimental-classical composer Ólafur Arnalds presents a much greater use of electronics and full embodied sounds than we’ve become accustomed to hearing from Arnalds.
Much of the somber notes heard on Arnalds’ previous records have been toned down for For Now I Am Winter, replaced with actually more vividly darker themes and mixed surprisingly with more poppy-level arrangements (“Old Skin”).
The record as a whole is a dynamic, fluid process that surprisingly works well considering the varying mesh of sounds heard throughout.
For Now I Am Winter moves at a brisker pace than Arnalds’ previous efforts but still maintains a sense of still life and vivid imagery, as dark as they may feel. For Now I Am Winter, even with all the new vocal inclusions, is a progressive record on Arnalds part and presents a new level of risk-taking for Arnalds that he more than meets the challenge.
