A sad day for both the classical, film, and Jewish communities. Alice Herz Sommer, whom until today was the oldest living pianist at 110 years old, passed away in her apartment according to Israeli national news.
She was most recently featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary The Lady in Number 6.
For Ms. Sommer, playing the piano not only saved her life during the Holocaust, it made her life
While she may never be known in the same pantheon in the likes of a Glenn Gould or a Lang Lang, she’ll live on in the spirit of all those who ever picked up and instrument…and just played.
Here’s to the beautiful music you’ve brought to the world from your humble apartment. You’ll always be playing in our hearts Ms. Sommer. This entry was posted in General and tagged Alice Herz-Sommer, oscar, piano on .
